It’s quite complicated. Melasti Ritual is a 3 days during ceremony of purification before entering the Nyepi. Nyepi is the Balinese New Year (they celebrate the year 1937 according to the Balinese calendar).
In the Hindu religion you have to purify your soul and mind in the water of Ganges. Of course, there is no Ganges in Indonesia, therefore people celebrate the purification in the water of Indian Ocean contained the power of Ganges. This is the reason, why ceremonies are located at the beaches.
